Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major coursework in related field, plus four (4) years of experience in the assigned area of specialization or;
Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Texas Driver’s License

The Health and Safety Coordinator will develop and oversee Austin Transportation Department’s health and safety programs. The ideal candidate:

Will develop/revise department safety policies and procedures manuals; schedule and plan quarterly all-employee safety meetings; provide health and safety topics and content for field crew’s weekly safety meetings; organizes safety campaigns
Understand and applies OSHA standards, city safety policies and procedures, etc.
Develop a four hour New Hire Safety Training Class for office and field employees; be certified or obtain certification to teach and train ATD employees in: First Aid, CPR/AED, hazardous communication, defensive driving for CDL drivers, traffic control, ergonomics, work zone safety, bloodborne pathogens, workplace safety, work zone safety, construction safety, defensive driving, verbal judo for parking enforcement, etc.
Conduct work place accidents and incident investigations, visit accident scenes, prepare reports, enters data into HR Safety portal, maintain statistics, analyzes data and develops proper training to reduce/eliminate injuries and collisions.
Prepare and maintain safety budget, safety databases, prepare quarterly reports and analysis to recommend improvements.
Perform risk assessments; develop safety audits of jobs, work environments, and field work locations to review and eliminate hazards and potential accidents
Oversee the department ‘s CDL drug and alcohol program; develop department employee safety committee and guidelines to ensure OHSA requirements are met
Must bring excellent computer skills, written and oral communication skills, as well as, excellent facilitating skills, and be passionate about health and safety.

Job Description
The Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator will be responsible for developing, administering, implementing, and evaluating the department-wide health and Safety program for the Austin Transportation Department. The position will manage the department’s compliance and applicable safety regulations and standards as defined by Federal, State or local government agencies, develop, oversee and monitor the department’s safety training activities designed to prevent mishaps and injuries, analyze department safety data to develop long and short term strategies to decrease and eliminate safety accidents.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Coordinates the activities of other occupational safety personnel within one or more divisions and departments if appropriate.
2. Plans, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates departmental occupational safety programs.
3. Provides guidance to field personnel with safety briefings.
4. Provides advice, and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of occupational safety issues and decisions.
5. Develops safety standards in compliance with industry standards, Federal, State, and Local regulations.
6. Develops and implements complex safety programs by inspecting or reviewing areas, equipment, processes, and work activities for hazardous conditions.
7. Develops and conducts occupational safety training for various workgroups. Including evaluation and modification of programs to meet local, state, and federal OSHA requirements.
8. Coordinates inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
9. Directs and reviews the analysis of accident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs.
10. Researches occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the work place.
11. Advises improvements in tracking and reporting procedures
Responsibilities- Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
Act as a team leader.
Provide direction and/or guidance to safety personnel.
Provide training to managers and others within the area of specialization

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of specialized technical knowledge related to area servicing.
Knowledge in the assigned human resources areas and in the operations of the City and/or its Departments.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances governing Occupational Safety.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Knowledge of safety policies and procedures,
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Ability to handle conflict in situations.
Ability to present oral presentations and training.
Ability to use the computerized tools, databases, and communications techniques used in human resources within the City of Austin municipal government
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to develop and maintain current knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety programs.
Ability to train others.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
